Green Materials

In choosing green products and materials, there are many factors that must be considered, as a feature that makes a product green in one category may not really apply to a product in another. As such, when searching for the best green choices, many different attributes must be examined, depending on the product or application. These can include products that:

  • Are low- or non-toxic
  • Do not off-gas
  • Contain recycled content
  • Are made from natural materials
  • Conserve energy or water
  • Can be recycled or disposed of safely
  • Are rapidly renewable

After consideration of all factors and product attributes, however, the final consideration must be performance. Although a product may be considered green for any number of reasons, if a green alternative cannot outperform a conventional product, it cannot be considered a viable option.

Each of the interior and exterior materials used at 93 Nevins/453 Pacific were chosen for their green attributes and excellent performance profile.

Fly Ash Concrete

U.S. power plants produce millions of tons of fly ash annually, which is usually dumped in landfills. Fly ash is an inexpensive replacement for portland cement, which improves workability, reduces water demand, increases strength, reduces segregation, and eases pumping of the concrete.

What Makes it Green?

  • Diverts waste from landfills
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions

Soy-Based Spray Foam Insulation
Manufactured from American-grown soy bean, an annually renewable resource, soy-based spray foam insulation expands its volume to completely fill every space and void, thereby creating a tight barrier and thermal seal. This barrier can greatly improve indoor air quality, as it blocks harmful outside pollutants and allergens, while also reducing noise pollution and lowering energy costs.

What Makes it Green?

  • Made from natural, renewable material
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Lowers heating and cooling costs

Sheetrock® Mold Tough™
Sheetrock Mold Tough is the first patented wallboard that actively inhibits mold growth not only on the paper surface, but throughout the gypsum core. Using a proprietary technology, ingredients are added during the manufacturing process to protect the wallboard from moisture and mold. Sheetrock Mold Tough installs and finishes as easy as drywall.

What Makes it Green?

  • Reduces health risks by inhibiting the growth of toxic mold
  • Improves indoor air quality

Recycled Steel Metal Siding
New steel made with recycled material uses as little as 26% of the energy that would be required to make steel from raw materials extracted from nature, while every ton of steel that is recycled saves: 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone. Recycled steel siding is extremely weather-resistant, dent-resistant and noncombustible, and with such high recycled content, presents an environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional materials.

What Makes it Green?

  • High recycled content
  • Recyclable after removal
  • Less energy used in manufacture

QuietRock® Soundproof Drywall
Like VOCs and mold, excessive noise can cause significant indoor environmental quality problems. QuietRock is the top-selling soundproof drywall in North America; Environmentally-friendly and lab-tested, a single layer of QuietRock is acoustically equivalent to 8 layers of standard drywall.

What makes it Green?

  • Decreases noise pollution
  • Low-VOC
  • Energy-efficient

IceStone®
Ideal for kitchen and bathroom use, IceStone surfaces are made locally in Brooklyn, from concrete and recycled glass, including multi-colored glass from bottles and jars from recycling programs across the northeast, as well as other post-industrial and salvaged sources like automobile windshields and building windows. IceStone surfaces are strong like granite, not as porous as marble, and heat-resistant like stone.

What makes it Green?

  • High recycled content
  • No-VOC
  • Manufactured locally
  • Cradle to Cradle™ certification

Andersen® Windows
Andersen is the only window, door and skylight manufacturer with products that are Green Seal certified, and was one of the first window companies in the U.S. to meet ENERGY STAR performance requirements in all regions. Features include low-emissivity coatings to reduce heat gain, better insulating properties, a low rate of infiltration, and solid wood construction.

What makes it Green?

  • Energy-efficient
  • Environmentally-responsible manufacturing
  • Responsibly-harvested wood
  • Recycled & reused content

ENVIROTEC® Adhesives

Adhesives is a category of building materials that is frequently overlooked, yet can have a significant impact on indoor air quality, as they are often more potentially hazardous than the flooring, carpet, and other products they are used to affix.

ENVIROTEC adhesives are non-toxic, solvent-free and low-VOC, were the first environmentally-friendly adhesives produced in the U.S.

What makes it Green?

  • Non-toxic, solvent-free, low-VOC
  • GREENGUARD certified
  • Meets all CRI Green Label program qualifications

Carpet

Most carpet is made with petrochemicals, and can be the source of potentially harmful gases – as can the padding, subflooring, and adhesives used in installation – which can continue to be released into the air for weeks after installation. In addition, though some carpet recycling efforts have been made, an estimated 4 billion pounds of carpet ends up in landfills each year. A number of carpet companies are taking steps to improve the environmental profile of their products, and to develop efficient carpet recycling programs. Environmentally-friendly carpets release minimal pollutants, are made with natural fibers and colored with natural pigments, use recycled content, are made from rapidly-renewable materials, and are not chemically treated.

Warmboard Radiant Subfloor
2007 Winner: Sustainable Industries Top 10 Green Building Products AwardWarmboard combines a structural subfloor and a thermodynamically sophisticated radiant panel into one simple radiant heating system component. Warmboard offers better conductivity, so more heat can be delivered from lower water temperatures, and less water is needed to produce heat – resulting in lower utility costs and less reliance on fossil fuels. One of Warmboard’s greatest advantages is its compatibility with virtually all floor coverings – working particularly well with hardwoods, yet delivering ample radiant heat through even the plushest carpeting; and tile or stone can be set over it using conventional methods.

What makes it Green?

  • Energy-efficient
  • Decreases reliance on fossil fuels, reduces energy costs
  • Uses less water than conventional radiant heating systems

Robur GAHP-AR Heat Pump

The Robur GAHP-AR is a reversible gas-fired absorption heat pump that alternately heats and cools, producing hot water up to 60˚C and chilled water down to 3˚C.

The GAHP-AR gas absorption heat pump sets itself apart from traditional electrical heat pumps because of the different energy that it uses; instead of consuming energy to operate a compressor, it uses natural gas (or LPG), which reduces electric power consumption by 86%. The gas feeds a premixing burner, which in turn heats a solution of water and ammonia in a completely sealed absorption circuit. Robur’s absorption heat pumps are hydronic, and thus allow for better management of heating and cooling input temperature. This allows for precise adjustments to indoor comfort, and increases the operating efficiency of the entire system.

What makes it Green?

  • Higher efficiency
  • Reduced electric power consumption
  • No water consumption
